When garlic isn’t, well, garlic

Elephant GarlicWhy would you call something garlic that isn’t? I’m guessing its because it really does look rather like large garlic and smells like a mild version of it’s namesake, and I kinda like it’s name – Elephant Garlic.

I purchase three bulbs from a farmer near Philip Island who had a big basket of it at the local market – she didn’t actually grow it to sell as such, it just grew wild on her property and she brings some along with her usual produce. It’s actually closely related to leeks and onions, so part of the same family, and I’ve planted some of the cloves/bulbs at the same time as my garlic this year to see how they go.

The cloves are huge and I’m looking forward to seeing how it does in my garden.
